21 Jun Universal Thrills and Chills
The beauty of travelling to Florida is that it is quick, easy and reasonably priced. From our home town in Ontario, we are able to arrive in Orlando at 1pm and be ready for our first cold beer no later than 2. But here is the real draw—hop on your shuttle from the airport to the Universal Resort and you are right where you need to be for the next four nights. No lengthy transfers or bus rides once you are in the Universal “compound”… everything you could possibly dream of is at your disposal.
My recommendation would be to have one full day at each of the three theme parks that make up the Universal Resort area. This means long days ( and nights!) but this is not a lazing around holiday! This is a fun escape to indulge your inner child and revitalize. First up, we have Universal Studios Florida: Hang on tight. Your heroes are about to burst through the screen and yank you into the story. You’re the star here and you’ll disappear into one jaw-dropping adventure after another. Dodge evil villains. Defend the earth. Face a fire-breathing dragon. Wander into animated worlds where characters you love are suddenly right beside you. Go beyond the screen, behind the scenes and jump into the action of your favourite films at the world’s premier movie and TV based theme park. A little higher on the thrills and chills scale, we have Universal Islands of Adventure :Prepare for a place where super heroes, beasts, and magical creatures stand before you. You’re entering lands where everything is real. Explore a secret school of witchcraft and wizardry. Fly high above the city streets with a famous web slinger. Hide from hungry dinosaurs and hope you’re not their next meal. And you can face the most colossal ape ever to walk the earth. Let the adventures begin. Brand new to the Universal family is Universal Volcano Bay: Water is Life. Life is Joy. That’s the philosophy celebrated at Universal’s Volcano Bay™ water theme park. It’s the carefree attitude the fabled Waturi islanders have embraced on their Pacific isle for centuries. Now you can live the Waturi way at this all-new park where thrills and relaxation flow in perfect harmony. With the power of the TapuTapu™ wearable, there’s no standing in long lines, carrying rafts around the park, nothing between you and a full day of fun. It’s an all-new kind of paradise, just steps away from everything Universal Orlando Resort™ has to offer. I am digging the Tapu Tapu thing– no line ups- you just tap your little bracelet and *poof* they tell you when to come back and ride! That works for me!
The parks are open from morning in to the early evening, so you are not super rushed and you can certainly do a whole park in one day with time to ride your favourite ride twice ! Once the darkness falls, it is time for a quick nap and clean up then off to City Walk. City Walk is where dining and entertainment collide—an `epicentre of awesomeness`adjacent to the theme parks. Here within lies the beauty of staying on site- you can do all your dining, entertainment and bar hopping within walking distance! No driving or trying to find a good spot to eat or play. Sing Karaoke or dance at a high energy club- its all at City Walk.
You have to sleep some time ( I guess…??) so the on-site accommodations are the way to go. My choice for a lead in on-site property would be Universal Cabana Bay. Enjoy vibrant, retro style with rooms and suites brilliantly designed for fun and affordability. Relax with a splash, surrounded by amazing iconic architecture inspired by classic Florida beach resorts of the 1950s and 60s. Every day comes with fun for all ages with two massive pools, a winding lazy river, a bowling alley and more.Another great choice is the Loews Sapphire Falls. Step into paradise in the heart of the tropics. Blue waterfalls cascade over lush grounds and in the distance, calming sounds of steel drums call you to take in the scenic views, ease into island time and let go. Amid the ruins, passageways and pools you’ll find numerous Caribbean-themed dining options. This refreshing resort offers an island escape for an unforgettable adventure. If you really want to amp it up, give Hard Rock Hotel a try. One of the coolest hotels on the planet. Live like a rock star and savour the perks of rock and roll royalty with impeccable accommodations, laid-back luxurious style and show-stopping service. The sweeping California mission-style design—inspired by classic rock music—welcomes you in to escape into a sensational world of palm-lined swimming pools featuring underwater music, acclaimed restaurants, incredible rock memorabilia and amped-up recreation featuring live music—including some famous names. All of these on site hotels offer early park entrance and staying at the Hard Rock gets you to the front of the line for all the rides—Score !
